Champagne de Horsey HISTORY
|
Champagne de Horsey was started in 1983 by Algernon de Horsey, who had been in the champagne business for many years. He died in 1997 and in the Daily Telegraph obituary it was stated that he was probably the greatest champagne salesman of all time. The business has been carried on by a new company whose Managing Director is his son, Richard de Horsey. The de Horsey family arrived in England with the Norman Conquest of 1066 and settled in Norfolk, the village of Horsey being their original home. The family also has ties with America, the 1738 Governor of North Carolina was Samuel Horsey. The family dropped the "de" from their name during the English Civil War when they fought on the side of Cromwell. The "de" was reinstated in 1832 by Royal Warrant. Algernon de Horsey's Great-Aunt Adeline married the Earl of Cardigan (of Charge of the Light Brigade fame) and her brother was ADC to Queen Victoria for many years. From the mid 19th century they have been a prominent naval family and this tradition continues up to modern times. The champagne is the family reserve of the de Horsey family. |
